The House of Hohenzollern was the ruling dynasty of Prussia (1701–1918) and the German Empire (1871–1918). Although the German monarchy was abolished in 1918, the family continues — and the current head, Prince Georg Friedrich of Prussia, would in 2025 be the formal heir-pretender to the German Imperial throne.
The Family's Roots: From Hohenzollern Castle to Prussia and the Empire
The dynasty takes its name from Hohenzollern Castle in Swabia. The Hohenzollerns ruled Brandenburg from 1417 and were elevated to Kings of Prussia in 1701. They became German Emperors in 1871 when Wilhelm I united Germany under Bismarck.
The Last Reigning Emperor
Kaiser Wilhelm II (1859 – 4 June 1941) was the last German Emperor, reigning 1888 to 9 November 1918 when he abdicated at the end of WWI. He lived in exile in the Netherlands until his death.
The 20th-Century Heads
After Wilhelm II's abdication, the pretendership passed through:
- Crown Prince Wilhelm (1882 – 1951)
- Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia (1907 – 1994) — his eldest sons were excluded from succession for marrying commoners
- Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia (Jr.) (1944 – 1977) — died in 1977
- The line passed to his then-unborn son Georg Friedrich
The Current Head: Prince Georg Friedrich of Prussia
Georg Friedrich Ferdinand, Prince of Prussia, born 10 June 1976 in Bremen, has been the head of the House since his grandfather's death in 1994.
His mother is Donata of Castell-Rüdenhausen. He is married to Princess Sophie of Isenburg (b. 7 March 1978) since 27 August 2011.
Their Children
Prince Carl Friedrich, born 20 January 2013 — heir.
Prince Louis Ferdinand, born 20 January 2013 — twin.
Princess Emma Marie, born 2 April 2015.
Prince Heinrich, born 17 November 2016.

What the Hohenzollern Family Story Teaches Us
A dynasty that ruled Prussia and Germany for over two centuries. An Empire ended by WWI. A current head whose own father died before he was born. A line that has survived past WWI, WWII, partition, reunification, and 100 years of republican government. A family that continues to exist as a private institution.
For every family — large or small, famous or otherwise — the Hohenzollern story carries the same lesson. Posthumous fathers leave their mark. Georg Friedrich never knew his father, who died in 1977 before his birth in 1976 — yet he is heir through that father's line. Write down the parents who came before children were born. They are still part of the tree.
