The House of Braganza ruled Portugal from 1640 to 1910 and Brazil from 1822 to 1889, founded as a Portuguese ducal house. After the 1910 republican revolution that ended Portuguese monarchy, the family continued as the official pretenders. The current head is Dom Duarte Pio, Duke of Braganza.
The Family's Roots: The Braganza Ducal Line
The dynasty was established in 1442 when King John I of Portugal's illegitimate son Afonso was made the first Duke of Braganza. The family came to the throne in 1640 with João IV, ending Spanish rule over Portugal.
The Last Reigning King
Manuel II of Portugal (15 November 1889 – 2 July 1932) was the last king. He fled into exile in England in October 1910 following the republican revolution. He died childless in 1932.
The Modern Pretender Line
After Manuel II's death, the pretendership passed to a junior Braganza branch. The line of succession went through Miguel Januário (1853 – 1927), then Duarte Nuno (1907 – 1976), and now to his son Duarte Pio.
The Current Head: Dom Duarte Pio
Duarte Pio, born 15 May 1945 in Bern, Switzerland, while his family was in exile, is the 24th Duke of Braganza. He returned to Portugal after the 1974 Carnation Revolution and is widely recognised as the legitimate pretender to the (now-extinct) throne. He flew helicopters in the Portuguese Air Force during the Angolan independence war.
He married Isabel de Herédia, of an aristocratic Portuguese family, on 13 May 1995 in Lisbon Cathedral — the first royal wedding held in Portugal since 1909.
Their Children
Duarte Pio and Isabel have three children:
Afonso de Santa Maria, Prince of Beira, born 25 March 1996 — heir apparent.
Maria Francisca, born 3 March 1997.
Dinis, Duke of Porto, born 25 November 1999.
The Brazilian Imperial Branch
A separate branch of the family descends from the Brazilian Imperial line — emperors Pedro I and Pedro II of Brazil, who reigned 1822 – 1889. The Brazilian imperial line continues today through descendants of Princess Isabel.

What the Braganza Family Story Teaches Us
A 600-year-old ducal-and-royal family. A monarchy ended by revolution in 1910 — and yet a family that continues to be recognised by Portugal as the official royal line. A wedding in 1995 that was Portugal's first royal wedding in 85 years. Three children carrying forward the symbolic role.
For every family — large or small, famous or otherwise — the Braganza story carries the same lesson. Family records survive even when political institutions don't. The Portuguese monarchy ended over a century ago — but the family is still publicly identifiable, still recognised, still recorded. Write down your family's record even when nobody asks for it. The record is what makes the family persist.
