In the modern global K-pop industry, no member of BTS has shaped the band's emotional and visual identity quite like Kim Taehyung, who is known by his stage name V. The Daegu-born son of a farmer father, who joined Big Hit Entertainment at fifteen, was the last BTS member announced before the band's June 2013 debut, and who has built parallel careers as the group's most distinctive vocalist (his solo album Layover hit Billboard 200 #2 in 2023), as a film actor, and as a painter, is one of the most internationally recognised faces in modern Korean popular culture. Behind every solo single sat a small Daegu farming family.
The Family's Roots: South Korea, Geochang and Daegu
The Kim family is Korean, with roots in Geochang County, South Gyeongsang Province, before moving to Daegu. V was born in Daegu on 30 December 1995.
His Parents
V's father is a farmer in the Geochang/Daegu area. His mother is a homemaker. Both have stayed completely out of public view.
His Siblings: Eonjin and Jeongkyu
V has two younger siblings, Kim Eonjin (younger sister) and Kim Jeongkyu (younger brother). Both have stayed deliberately out of the press.
V is widely known to be deeply close to his paternal grandmother, who lived with the family during much of his childhood. She passed away in September 2014, in the middle of BTS's first year as a band, and her death is widely referenced in his lyrics.
His Education and Path
V was passionate about music from a young age — his father bought him a saxophone when he was in middle school. He auditioned for Big Hit Entertainment at fifteen in Daegu and trained with the company for two years before being announced as the seventh and final member of BTS just before debut.

What the Kim Family Story Teaches Us
A farmer father. A homemaker mother. A younger sister and younger brother. A paternal grandmother who lived with the family and whose death is still referenced in his music a decade later. From one Daegu farming household came one of the most internationally recognised K-pop voices of the 2020s.
For every family — large or small, famous or otherwise — the V story carries the same lesson. Grandparents who lived with you shape who you become. V's grandmother is still in his songs ten years after her death — because the people you grew up alongside become part of your creative work whether you mean it or not. Write down the grandparents who lived in the same house. They belong on the tree as parents, not as distant ancestors.
